You may be reading this thinking there’s no way you’ll ever be held responsible for planning an event.

OR, maybe you’re someone who’s a seasoned event planning aficionado – an expert who knows *all the things* but wishes there was a way to easily teach others the things that are so second nature to you after so much experience.

You might even fall somewhere in between these two extremes, and wherever you find yourself… HI! 👋we’re glad you’re here.

After over a decade of creating events people love (not the boring kind), we thought it would be fun to share 3 “cookies on the bottom shelf” event tips that frankly, everyone should know!

After reading this blog, you’ll definitely feel a little boost of confidence at your next event, and you’ll even be equipped to teach these tips to others (we’ll make it real simple for ya).

At a minimum, you’ll have some pretty cool party tricks in your back pocket 😃😅

3 SIMPLE EVENT TIPS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW:

  • How to hold a mic:
  • Knowing how to hold a mic and/or how to guide someone else to hold a mic (i.e. your keynote speaker) is one of the most important things to know. We’ve all been at a gathering where no one can hear the person on the mic…OR the way they’re talking into it is all kinds of fuzzy and loud. We don’t want either of these to be a reality for you.

When it comes to the best way to hold a mic, the most important thing to remember is that if all else fails, just rest the mic on your chin below your mouth (no awkward breathing noises, please 😅). While this position is technically a little too close and won’t result in the perfect volume/sound quality, it will ensure that the volume is loud enough for everyone to hear your amazing content.

The BEST way to know you’re doing this right? Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. Nothing builds confidence like having intentional time set aside to do a sound check. It is BEYOND worth the extra time it takes. Trust us!

  • Planning for basic needs:

  • This one very well might sound like common sense, but you wouldn’t believe the conversations we’ve had with people planning events who have forgotten to think about where guests/attendees will access things like water, restrooms, etc.

No matter the type of event you’re planning, there are basic human needs that should always be planned for.

    1) Know where restrooms/water are located at your event (and that there’s enough)

    2) Plan specific breaks for these to be accessed

    3) Communicate this information clearly to attendees

Annnnd if you’re planning a virtual event and think this doesn’t apply – guess again! No one wants to be “that guy/gal” who awkwardly goes camera-off during a key portion of your event because you didn’t plan time into the schedule for restroom/water/food breaks. Sprinkling these breaks into your event will also help people stay engaged.

  • Plan for FUN or weave your content into the event in a fun way:

  • If you haven’t noticed, we’re big believers in incorporating fun into every single experience. Don’t be mistaken, there are absolutely times for serious and heartfelt moments, and those are incredibly important as well.

But what many people miss is the impact that happens as a result of creating smiles and laughter at an event. It’s an underrated aspect that can change the landscape of the entire experience.

This doesn’t have to be as extreme as hiring a comedian or magician to hop on stage during the restroom breaks we talked about above, promise (although that does sound pretty cool 😁)

Simply incorporating funny and authentic moments into your run-of-show (click here if you don’t know what that is) will keep things fresh and most importantly: human.

Smiling and laughter = real, human nature. Lean into the way the atmosphere and people’s posture will soften as a result of your willingness to weave fun and joy into your event.
