Seven Years of Student Leaders

The Shelby County Leadership Summit — an annual conference for middle and high school student leaders, built to send young people back to their schools and communities ready to act.

The Shelby County Leadership Summit was born from one teacher’s conviction that students are capable of more than they’re given credit for. John Milton, a teacher in Shelby County, Alabama, started this conference seven years ago with a simple goal: encourage student leaders to thrive in their schools and communities.

Seven years later, that vision is still showing up — and so are the students.

Each year, hundreds of middle and high school student leaders gather for a full day of conversation, challenge, and connection. This year’s summit featured Kevin Scott, co-founder of ADDO, as the guest speaker — sparking discussions that didn’t stay politely contained to Q&A. Students stood up in front of 400 peers to share their ideas for impact projects, to call out teachers, friends, and family members who had shaped their desire to lead, and to wrestle openly with what leadership actually means when you’re living it every day.

WHY ELEVATE

So John Could Focus on His Students

John Milton has been building this summit for seven years. The last thing he needs on event day is to worry about slide transitions and mic cables.

The Challenge

Keep a well-established annual conference feeling fresh, high-energy, and meaningful for 400 students — while giving the organizers the freedom to be fully present with the young people they’ve shown up to serve.

Our Approach

We’ve been part of the Shelby County Leadership Summit for multiple years, and every year our role is the same: own the production so the organizers can own the room. Sound, visuals, hosting, run of show, engagement activations — all of it handled, so John and his team can put their eyes on the students walking through the door.

WHAT WORKED

Four Hundred Students. Zero Passive Observers.

When the discussions opened up, the room didn’t stay quiet. Students stood up — in front of 400 of their peers — to share impact project ideas, to recognize the teachers and family members who shaped them, and to talk about what leadership actually looks like in their daily lives. That kind of engagement isn’t manufactured. It’s earned.

For Elevate, being trusted with this summit year after year is the kind of partnership we don’t take lightly. John Milton built something genuinely special in Shelby County — and we’re proud to help him deliver it every year.

"I can't imagine running anything like this without Elevate being involved. What Elevate does is take whatever it is you're doing and get your message across in a really engaging way."
