PASSION CITY VR
Using innovative technology to teach and inspire
In Fall of 2017, our team partnered alongside Passion City, a nonprofit in Atlanta, to host an innovative gathering for their group of 100 middle school and high school students. We used virtual reality experiences to create an engaging environment while connecting students with the 3D event theme.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Inspiring students through Virtual Reality
Our team specializes in events and innovation, and had the opportunity to turn Passion City’s youth gathering into a custom experience where many teenagers interacted with a new technology for the first time.
Our team included:
- 1 Project Lead
- 2 Virtual Reality Leads
- 2 Virtual Reality Assistants
Prior to the event, Elevate’s project lead consulted with the Passion City team to hear their goals for the event and to design a unique experience. Based on our understanding of the audience, we crafted a VR menu specifically for the audience. We chose VR experiences that would allow for the highest amount of student engagement, with the hope of enhancing the experience and leaving students remarking about the event.
During the event, our team:
- Greeted students upon arrival and engaged with students during breaks
- Led students through virtual reality experiences
- Answered students’ questions around VR systems
Introducing new and exciting technology to a younger generation not only allowed for a novel experience, but led to conversations around creativity, innovation, and critical thinking. We used VR to inspire guests and create impact, leaving students curious about the future and ready to learn more about technological advancements.
How it works
Depending on the number of guests and the type of VR experiences (or games) chosen for an event, the number of VR systems needed and amount of people to experience VR can vary at each event. At Passion City’s student gathering, we set up two VR systems and led approximately 45 students through virtual reality each hour.
The VR setup included two VR stations, each consisting of:
- Full VR system equipment
- Headset and earphones
- Remotes
- Safety mat
- TV screens for visual display
- Stanchions to block off the VR station
Our team creates opportunities for those observing the experience to also find entertainment and inspiration throughout the event. Whether waiting in line to participate or simply standing by to watch, the crowd sees both the person interacting with virtual reality, as well as the experience itself. We set up TV screens with a visual display to ensure everyone in the room can see what the person “in” VR sees, and cheer on their friends.
At the Passion City student gathering, our team of VR leads and assistants had the opportunity of introducing this new technology to hundreds of students. Both our client and the event guests were incredibly happy with the turnout of the event, believing both the Elevate team and the VR stations enhanced the overall experience of the evening:
“The VR experience that Elevate provided really took our event to another level. The actual product is stunning but their team also enhanced the entire experience. We had some unique asks that were specific to our event and they were accommodating to our needs with a smile on their face. It was refreshing!” (Joe Brim, Passion Students)
